The ceasefire between the United States and Iran has weakened the US dollar, which has fallen to its lowest level in around a month. Investor interest in US dollar-denominated safe-haven assets is therefore waning, triggering \u2013 as is (almost) always the case \u2013 a positive reaction in the price of gold. <\/span><\/p>\n

Gold appears to be entering a consolidation phase above the critical threshold of $4,600 an ounce \u2013 on Wednesday 8 April alone, it rose by more than 2.8%. Following the falls triggered by the energy crisis, the safe-haven asset is regaining ground, fuelling bullish investor sentiment. <\/span><\/p>\n

The main driver behind the price rise is the ceasefire between the United States and Iran: a two-week truce, conditional on Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Energy commodities have suffered a sharp setback (oil fell by 16% yesterday), sparking a resurgence of interest in gold among investors. However, the situation remains in constant flux, given Iran\u2019s total closure of the Strait in response to Israeli air strikes in Lebanon. <\/span><\/p>\n

For the time being, the safe-haven asset remains firmly above $4,600, but before we can look towards $5,000 again, it needs to consolidate above the new critical threshold, set at $4,800. <\/span><\/p>\n

The first key support level to break below is at $4,700 per ounce. <\/span><\/p>\n

The chart below clearly shows the annual trend in gold prices. It shows a record-breaking 2025, with a peak of over $5,600 reached at the end of January 2026, followed by a correction described by many analysts as \u2018healthy\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is important to clarify that, despite the fears of gold investors \u2013 who are concerned that gold has lost its role as a safe-haven asset in times of war \u2013 there have been no structural changes in its role within investment portfolios. <\/span>
\n<\/span>Indrani De, Head of Global Investment Research at FTSE Russell, stated that gold\u2019s recent performance is the result of conflicting macroeconomic factors, which are reshaping the way investors engage with the precious metal in the short term. Gold continues to benefit from geopolitical uncertainty, but it is important to distinguish between long-term fundamentals and short-term headwinds. <\/span><\/p>\n

The rise in the cost of energy commodities has reignited fears of inflation, prompting banks to raise interest rates. As a result, holding an asset that does not generate a return \u2013 such as gold \u2013 now comes at a higher cost. <\/span>
\n<\/span>It should be noted, however, that the rally at the end of 2025 has caused gold to behave in a manner typical of a financial asset, including periods of profit-taking following sharp rises. This new trend has made gold more sensitive to market liquidity conditions, particularly during periods \u2013 such as the one we are currently experiencing \u2013 when fears of high energy prices increase the need for liquidity. <\/span><\/p>\n

Gold remains an important means of portfolio diversification for investors, offering stability and capital protection in uncertain times. <\/span><\/p>\n
